Skin complications and infections are frequent issues for those with lymphedema. Therefore, skin care plays an important role in both phases of Complex/Complete Decongestive Therapy – a specific treatment for lymphedema that includes phases of decongestion (Phase I) and maintenance (Phase II).
Wearing compression bandages or garments daily can stress your skin: it may become dry and prone to minor injuries like scratches. This, in turn, increases the risk of bacterial infections. Deep skin folds that may develop because of swelling and an increase in fatty tissue also increase the risk for infections.
Infections, such as bacterial cellulitis, can further harm your lymphatic system and worsen your symptoms. The aim of skin care for lymphedema is to keep your skin intact and reduce the risk for infections as much as possible.
