Although lipedema is a chronic (long-term) condition without a cure, it can be well-managed with conservative therapy. This means that non-surgical treatments such as compression therapy, exercise, and weight management are sufficient to manage the signs and symptoms. Surgical treatment, such as liposuction, might be appropriate in exceptional cases.
What it takes to cope with lipedema
Lipedema treatment – a holistic approach
As soon as a diagnosis of lipedema is confirmed, you and your healthcare professional will develop an individual and holistic treatment plan. The main elements of lipedema treatment are:
- Compression therapy: one of the key elements of lipedema treatment that can reduce pain and discomfort, supports the tissue, and improves mobility
- Physiotherapy/movement: this improves your well-being and supports weight management
- Psychological support: helps to cope with depression, anxiety, or eating disorders
- Weight management: refers to a healthy and balanced nutrition program, rather than diets
- Skin care: moisturizing body lotions or creams to protect skin that may be stressed by wearing compression garments
Surgery: this may be an option when conservative treatment is not sufficient.
