Accumulation of fluid in the tissues of the lower limb is called edema, and is often due to poor return of blood in the venous system back to the heart, or accumulation of fluid in the tissue due to insufficient lymph drainage. This happens when the lymphatic system is overwhelmed, either because it is not functioning properly or because there is too much fluid for a normal lymphatic system to process.
Anyone can experience swollen legs or feet at some point in their life. Edema can be triggered by several conditions and causes. These include:
- Lymphedema
- Chronic venous disease
- Deep vein thrombosis (DVT)
- Post-thrombotic syndrome
- Congestive heart failure
- Organ dysfunction (kidney, liver, thyroid, etc.)
- Inflammatory disorders (arthritis, dermatitis, etc.)
- Certain medications
- Pregnancy
- Trauma
- Immobility or dependency (not moving or legs being down for extended periods)
